Today students will begin their Greek Drama unit, in which we will be reading Oedipus Rex by Sophocles, a play that tells a story of a hero and his quest for the truth about his life. Students will then take notes from a PowerPoint presentation about Greek Theater and Tragedy and will also go over a handout that explains the Roles of the Chorus in Greek theater. Students will learn the vocabulary word catharsis, the purging or releasing emotions that results in the of feeling relief or renewal. Students will also watch a short National Theater YouTube video about the structure, purpose and relevance of Greek drama. With time left in class, students will use their critical thinking skills to try to solve a variety of riddles, in honor of the riddles in the story of Oedipus Rex, which students will begin reading next week.
