Today students will continue learning about WWII and the Holocaust, focusing today on learning about real images of the Holocaust and Holocaust denial. Students will then view another PowerPoint with historical images of the Holocaust, including pictures of Jewish ghettos, deportation, traveling on cattle cars, the arrival at Auschwitz, working in the camps, death in the camps, and after-liberation photographs of the camps and survivors. We will watch a short clip from the 2007 movie Freedom Writers about how small prejudices can lead to mass oppression. As a conclusion to this discussion, students will read a "Letter to a teacher from a Child of the Holocaust" to reiterate the point of our study of this unit. Next, students will read the preface to the Holocaust survival novel, Night, by Elie Wiesel, and will discuss the power of words and language, focusing and the unit vocabulary term, oppression. Students will also discuss the literary elements as they relate to the preface of the novel. Today students will learn about connections to the study of the Holocaust and anti-semitism relevant in today's world. Students will first watch the NBC Nightly News broadcast segment from December 5th, 2018 about the re-release of Stephen Spielburg's 1993 Holocasut film Schindler's List and the connection this film has to our world today, including anti-semitism in the United States. Students will watch another NBC Nightly News broadcast from October 27, 2018 about the synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh, targeted by the murderer because of anti-semitism and hatred towards Jews. Students will then watch a short segment of Vice News footage taken from the "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, Virginia in August of 2017. Students will discuss their reactions to these informational pieces of text, as well as make connections to the Holocaust unit. Today students will continue the Holocaust unit.
